Porcelain Paper Slip, Mixed Media, Cone 10
For this series, I found inspiration in the traditional papel picado style, using porcelain paper clay to craft intricate banners. Each banner features a dismissive quote in Spanish commonly uttered by Mexican (Latinx) individuals when faced with adversity. Phrases like "No pasa nada," "Así es la vida," "Todo bien," "Está bien," "Sin llorar," and "No hay pedo" reflect the tendency within Hispanic culture to brush off difficulties with seemingly light-hearted remarks. These phrases often follow discussions of even the most traumatic experiences, serving to downplay or dismiss the gravity of the situation. The intention behind these banners is to shed light on the cultural tendency to celebrate hardships in a seemingly carefree manner, despite the underlying fragility and strain it may cause. It's a poignant reminder that while such dismissive attitudes may prevail, the reality is far from okay, and it's crucial to acknowledge and address the deeper complexities of our experiences.
